It happens. We take every precaution to prevent summer sunburn and sun exposure, but despite the many warnings from the skin care specialists that we most trust, we fail.
Sometimes, we simply forget the sunscreen, and an afternoon at the pool turns into a night of torture, as if your skin has turned into hot pavement on a 5th of July afternoon. Other times, it is just simple vanity. We remember the “good ole days” when sunbathing and tanning made us look younger and healthier. No matter that the facts against over exposure to the sun have proven the golden days of yore were wrong, a little inner voice tells us, “Go ahead, get just a bit of a tan for that healthy glow.” And then, the next thing, hours later, we feel that scorching burn and our skin feels like fire.
OK, then what? There is hope. Here are the 5 top remedies for that burn.
The LIPS! Each summer, millions of us remember to get the sunscreen and to moisturize our face, body and limbs. YET, the same millions take our lips for granted. This common mistake leads to short-range and long-range issues because we fail to adequately protect our lips.
Sun damage to lips can cause a host of problems:
“Ultraviolet (UV) rays are the most important risk factor when it comes to skin cancer — UV rays are associated with 90 percent of all nonmelanoma skin cancers (NMSC) says the Skin Cancer Foundation (SCF). Lips have no melanin, which makes them more susceptible to sun damage cause by UV exposure. Signs of sun damage on the lips develop overtime as a result of excessive sun exposure over the years.”
OKAY! Do we have your attention yet?
Taking care of your lips is fundamental and essential to summer skin care. And, it is relatively easy to do, and inexpensive. First, drink lots of water. Keep your body hydrated for your skin and your lips. Then, invest in a good lip balm. There are many on the market, such as Banana Boat Sport Performance Lip Balm, but these products contain harsh chemicals such as polyethelene, petrolatum, trimethylsiloxyphenyl, isopropyl myristate, to just name a few of over a dozen chemicals.
Esthetician Jaque Hart states, “Lips take alot of abuse. They lack the attention and protection that the rest of our summer skin enjoys. Summer time can really take a toll on lips. In fact, lips have almost no melanin, which helps screen out the sun’s harmful rays. As a result, lips rarely tan, but they can easily burn. Be kind to your pout with jane iredale Lip Drink. A translucent lip balm. It is an SPF of 15, UVB/UVA broad spectrum. It combines titanium dioxide, carrot seed oil and avocado oil, for a protective sheild.”
Spa LaDonna recommends Jane Iredale Lip Drink, with organic ingredients like seed oil, lotus flower, green tea leaf extract, coconut alkanes, blackberry fruit extract and lemon peel oil. And, a tube only costs $12.00, and will more than last the entire summer! Studies have found that popular over-the-counter brands exaggerate the SPF as well, but the jane iredale brand labels the correct SPF coverage! And jane iredale‘s products are free from animal testing too!

These days, there are an overwhelming number of sunscreens. Choosing the best sunscreen for your skin can be difficult, to say the least. There are several factors to consider when choosing sun protection products. Here are some of the necessary information needed to choose the correct sunscreen for you and your family.
First, learning about ultraviolet rays is essential. Ultraviolet rays are damaging to the skin, and are delineated by Ultraviolet A rays (UVA) and Ultraviolet B rays.
UVA are constant and can penetrate window glass, altitude.. These rays cause wrinkles and penetrate deep into the layers of the skin. UVA rays are 20 TIMES more abundant than UVB rays! These are the rays that cause tanning and sunburn. prematurely age your skin.
UVB rays, on the other hand, cannot pass through window glass. These are also the rays that help the body make Vitamin B. UVB rays are manipulated by time of day, season, and altitudes. UVB rays cause damage to the deepest layer of skin. However, according to skincancer.org, “Studies over the past two decades, however, show that UVA damages skin cells called keratinocytes in the basal layer of the epidermis, where most skin cancers occur.
UVB rays can cause skin cancer and damage to the eyes at the deepest level of the skin. UVA tans and/or burns the top layer of the skin. UVA cause premature aging and age spots.
So, when choosing a sunscreen, which to choose? In general, sunscreen is measured by SPF (sun protection factor). SPF 15 will block 93% of the UVB rays, and SPF 30 will block 97% of the UVB rays. SPF 50 will block 98%, but the 1% difference is substantial, particularly for fair skin. Sunscreens that also block UVA rays are marked as “broad-spectrum.” This is essential to remember! If you desire to help eliminate UVA (tanning and burning) and UVB (skin cancer protection) rays, you must choose a product listed as “broad spectrum!”

What can you expect? A Jessner Peel can help reduce the appearance of acne; additionally, the peel can reduce hyper pigmentation of the skin. Fine lines and wrinkles can be smoothed out, and the skin will be given a youthful glow. The complexion will be improved greatly, and pores may be reduced in size.
So, What is The Jessner Peel?
Dr. Max Jessner created the Jessner Peel over 100 years ago. Utilizing a formula of varying chemicals that he found to reduce toxicity of peeling agents, the Jessner Peel, with modern improvements, has proven to be the safe alternative to TCA Peels.
In 1932, German dermatologist P.G. Unna incorporated trichloroacetic acid (TCA), which has become the primary agent in non-Jessner chemical peels. The advantage of TCA seemed to be its strength, but over time, regulations have capped TCA peels at 50% TCA, even though recommendations call for 40% or less. TCA peels can cause scarring over 40% and are possibly harmful during pregnancy.
Jessner’s Peel, however, eliminates the TCA, and currently is a solution of resorcinol, and two beta hydroxy acids, salicylic and resorcinol. These are dissolved in a solution of ethanol. The result is a peel that removes the top layer of skin, revealing a fresh layer of skin with a reduction in age spots, blemishes, freckles, acne, and fine wrinkles.
The Jessner Peel has eliminated most side effects, all though over has shown the possibility of thyroid issues to a few users. TCA peels, at the opposite end of the spectrum, have proven to cause fungus and bacteria at times, as well as some scarring for over-exposure.
Spa La Donna offers the Jessner Peel, available only with one lower exposure, referred to as a “medium depth peel.” At Spa LaDonna, this peel is first applied in the Spa, but the follow up can be applied at home with a take home kit.
This month, until May 20, Spa LaDonna is offering the Jessner Peel at half price! Normally $150 for in-spa treatment, this special costs only $75, and includes the take home kit for follow up treatment!
